Project Management

With the industry’s requirement for control of costs, delivery time and quality, and not least as a result of the last few decade's demand for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deliveries, Aker Kvaerner has developed an approach to project execution excellence. For the purpose of successful execution and delivery, the Project Execution Model (PEM) is implemented across Aker Kvaerner companies worldwide.

The Project Execution Model is the most important business initiative within Aker Kvaerner and forms the basis for standardising our project execution methodology across our diverse business. It enables more consistent and improved performance towards satisfying our customers' expectations, as well as sustainable business presence in the markets we are currently participating.

The main principles of the PEM are:

  • A common approach irrespective of size and complexity.
  • Predictable successful outcomes to product delivery.
  • Enhanced risk management.
  • More effective work processes.
  • Common language and terminology.
  • Effective communication and utilisation.
  • Activities carried out at the right time and in the right sequence.
  • Milestone gate reviews at the control level of the model.
  • Auditable documentation and decision-making process.
  • End product focus for effective project planning of future activities.
  • Defined roles, responsibilities and accountabilities throughout life cycle.
  • Empowerment, accountability and hands-on management.
  • Continuous learning.

We have an experienced resource of project management and project services personnel to ensure that all projects, large or small, are executed in accordance with the PEM and project specific execution philosophies.

In general terms, the key aspects of Aker Kvaerner's overall project management approach can be summarised as follows:

  • Clear definition of the requirements of the project at the outset – regularly reviewed and updated thereafter.
  • Use of tried and tested systems and procedures.
  • Operations, commissioning and construction experience input from the design stage onwards.
  • Sound project control and risk management systems.
  • Strong emphasis on planning and progress monitoring backed up with effective computerised systems to ensure timely completion of the work.
  • Safety integrated into the team structure and fully involved with the key strategies and decisions.
  • Formal approach to technical and commercial integrity – quality built in from day one with structured approach to safety and design reviews.
  • Emphasis on value – lifetime costs considered rather than just the short term “apparent” costs.
  • Experienced, high calibre, highly motivated staff with a dedicated taskforce team, matched to the project requirements.
  • Experienced, technically qualified site construction and commissioning personnel backed with sound safety and commercial systems.
  • Clear and open communications with all parties.
  •  “No surprises” project management style.
