Modern smelters protect the environment by capturing sulphur which is produced during the metal processing operation and converting it into sulphuric acid, a useful and valuable chemical.
Aker Solutions executed a lump-sum turnkey contract for basic and detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and start-up assistance for a USD 60 million sulfuric acid plant at Codelco, Division El Teniente’s Caletones Smelter, 100 km southeast of Santiago, Chile. El Teniente is the world’s largest underground copper mine.
The project included gas cleaning facilities, the acid plant to treat gases from the smelter’s Teniente converting furnace and two conventional converters, and effluent treatment. Production capacity is more than 2,000 tonnes per day of sulfuric acid.
