Star Strike II


Client:  Solvay Minerals, Inc.

This USD 100 million project included engineering for a three-phase expansion that will increase soda ash production from 2.3 to 3.5 million tons per year.  After conversion of the project to a lump-sum contract, construction of the first phase was completed in late 2000, with the addition of a fourth processing line for an increase of 400,000 tpy.

The project scope included:

  • New primary crushing/screening facilities
  • Addition of a new calciner and associated equipment
  • Modification and addition of tankage
  • Addition of a mechanical vapor recompressor (MVR)crystallizer
  • New cluster of cyclones and centrifuges
  • New product dryer and associated equipment
  • New feed belt system to deliver final product to two new storage silos (Phase II)
  • Rewiring of the existing plant to accommodate a DCS instrumentation/controls switchover
  • Implementation of a conversion of the entire electrical distribution system

Project Highlights

 
The project included more than 400 process tie-ins without a major shutdown, and 1.15 million manhours worked without a lost-time accident. Work was completed under budget and ten weeks ahead of schedule. This was the second major expansion Solvay awarded to Aker Solutions.
