GlaxoSmithKline, Harlow, UK

Completion: 2002
Scope of Work: Consultancy, Engineering
Project Value: £300,000

The development and clinical trials facility at Harlow began occupancy in 1997, predominately utilising existing equipment transferred from other facilities. In 1999 a review of prospective new drugs to be formulated within the facility revealed a substantial increase in product potency. This combined with the establishment of internal guidelines on handling potent drugs and the classification of drugs into potency bands, based on airborne concentration limits, highlighted the need for a project to increase the containment levels associated with processing and product transfer.

Manipulator

The project, managed by GSK’s project improvement team, called in AK pharmaceuticals to:

  • Pass on knowledge of engineering systems capable of achieving the required containment levels
  • Perform an assessment of the suitability for each unit operation, including cost and operability
  • Recommend final engineering control solutions
  • Assist in containment testing
  • Perform cost estimation
  • Produce specifications and perform pre-procurement services
  • Select vendors
Flexible Isolator

The processes evaluated in the project included dispensing, wet granulation, fluid bed drying, milling, sieving, IBC filling and discharging, blending, tablet and capsule filling.

The solutions purchased include a number of technologies:
  • Split butterfly
  • Continuous liner
  • Bag over bag
  • Click-ring
  • Isolator
  • Flexible isolator
  • Glove bag
The project has been executed over a two-year period.
