Site Master Planning is both an art and a science. Whilst it requires a rational analyst to determine a design which best fits the constraints of the site and the business plan, creativity, flair and imagination are needed to meet corporate and employee aspirations for the site image and working environment.
Aker Kvaerner’s consultant architects and engineers are well experienced in master planning activities for all sectors of the pharmaceutical industry.
Even on a ‘greenfield’ site, the arrangement of buildings and facilities is subject to multiple constraints, and experience has shown that the first layout conceived is rarely the best possible. Where possible, several alternative schemes are prepared and evaluated before agreeing with the client which option should be further developed.
On existing, or ‘brownfield’ sites, the Master Plan may stretch over a number of years and include a schedule for the phased replacement of older buildings until the optimum arrangement is reached.
As nothing in the future is certain, today’s plans may not fully match future needs. Part of the skill we use in site master planning is to explore future alternative options to enable plans to be changed and adapted as circumstances change. This enables decisions to be made now; knowing that if the future is different, the plan has the maximum in-built flexibility to accommodate such change in an economical, structured and cost-effective manner. This approach gives decision-makers the reassurance that uncertainty about the future can be managed, and projects can progress without the need to know, in any detail, future needs.
