Aker Solutions designed and supplied 17 plants for producing chlorine and caustic soda. We carry out all the basic design and detailed engineering for all areas of chlor-alkali plants apart from membrane cells. However, we have worked with several suppliers of membrane cells.
During the past 20 years, we have also designed many plants using ICI’s mono-polar technology especially for the pulp and paper industry. Other Aker Solutions plants have been based on the bi-polar cells of Asahi Chemical Industries Limited and, more recently, on the cells of Chlorine Engineers Corp. Ltd. We use our own technology for chlorine drying and compression and for salt solution and brine purification.
We also have broad experience in the related processes for the production of sodium chlorate (for which Aker Solutions' Chemetics business has its own technology), hydrochloric acid and chlorine dioxide.
In the past few years, we have also designed and supplied several plants for the production of sulphuric acid and oleum. Our innovations have advanced the design of sulphuric acid plants, first by reducing corrosion in heat exchangers and then by improving the efficiency and reducing the size of the converter.
We have been involved in the detailed engineering of all these plants for producing inorganic chemicals, which are all potentially noxious materials and must not be released to the environment. We have extensive experience in the choice of materials of construction for the corrosive conditions, designing pipework and ducting, allowing for thermal expansion and optimising layout. We are also accustomed to procuring critical equipment on a worldwide basis.
