The project is known as the Trawsfynydd Strategic Integrated Framework (TSIF) and was established under a procurement model that was thoughtfully designed to promote innovation and performance improvements in what is a relatively traditional industry. After initially being awarded a three year contract, this has now been extended by a further two years with a possibility for further extensions if excellent performance is maintained.
Aker Solutions’ work involves the clean up of the nuclear wastes that resulted from 30 years of nuclear power generation at the site. This requires us to design, construct, commission, and operate facilities that retrieve and safely package the nuclear waste and finally de-contaminate the associated facilities. This work is being delivered by operating six or more interrelated projects at any one time and at peak comprised of twelve decommissioning projects, with a total value to date of around NOK 460 million.
Aker Solutions is partnering with three other major contractors to undertake the works and through this partnership arrangement is demonstrating the benefits of collaborative working in the nuclear industry. In recognition of the success of the TSIF approach, the project was recently accepted as a Demonstration Project by Constructing Excellence Wales, a cross industry body for improving construction in the UK. This is the first time that a nuclear industry project has entered the programme. The Demonstration Project programme is designed to stimulate excellence in construction project delivery though the application of best practice and innovation through collaborative working.
The importance of the collaborative approach has been fundamental to the success of the project and this success has the potential to strongly influence the design of future procurement models across the whole of the nuclear industry.
