Boosting production from Tyrihans

Increasing oil recovery and production rates from their reservoirs is an appealing prospect for any oil operating company. That is why StatoilHydro will be utilising Aker Solutions’ SeaBooster™ pump system technology for its Tyrihans development in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea.

In June 2006, Aker Solutions signed a letter of intent with StatoilHydro to provide a subsea raw seawater injection (SRSWI) pump system to the Tyrihans field. The task was to develop technology that would increase oil production from the field by 10 percent.

Aker Solutions’ SeaBooster™

At the end of 2008, the manufacture of the three pumps was completed and they were transported from Aker Solutions’ facility at Tranby, Norway, to Horten where they underwent installation testing.

At the heart of the SeaBooster™ system for Tyrihans will be two LiquidBooster™ centrifugal pumps, a design evolved from Aker Solutions’ long-established proprietary pump technology for exporting crude oil and pumping produced water.

The pump system will be installed in 270 metres water depth approximately 31 kilometres from the Kristin platform. Both the tested pump duty of 2.7 megawatt and the 31 kilometre step-out represent new world records for subsea pumps.

The pumps will draw in 14 000 cubic metres of untreated seawater each day, injecting it into the sea bed between the oil reservoirs Tyrihans North and South. When this is combined with gas injection, optimal pressure support is obtained in the reservoir and a higher degree of oil recovery and production is achieved.

It is expected that the pumps alone will help increase production by 19 million barrels of oil during the field's lifetime.

Production from the Tyrihans field is due to start in 2009.

In 2007, the SeaBooster™ system was acknowledged with a prestigious “Spotlight on New Technology Award” at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston.
