Consortium to deliver new onshore LNG terminals

HOUSTON, USA JUNE 16, 2004 - Aker Kvaerner and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) have established a consortium to offer turnkey design and construction of new onshore LNG receiving terminals in USA and Canada. Many such development projects are currently being evaluated by energy companies. The new consortium combines Aker Kvaerner’s leading expertise in regasification, engineering and construction management for LNG facilities and IHI’s position as the market leader within design and manufacturing of LNG storage tanks and process systems.

Over two dozen LNG receiving terminal projects have been suggested for the USA alone, to increase the capacity for energy supplies based on LNG (liquefied natural gas). The LNG is brought in by large carrier ships from plants overseas, requiring receiving terminal capacity expansion to meet the gas demand for power and consumers.

Aker Kvaerner is currently performing studies, pre-engineering, and detailed design for several possible offshore LNG terminal projects. Through the partnership with IHI, a cost-efficient solution for upcoming onshore LNG terminals has been established. The partnership could later be expanded to also include offshore LNG terminal tanks.

The expertise and experience of Aker Kvaerner and IHI compliments each other. Both companies have health, safety and environment (HSE) as the top priority for their operations, and both are among the industry leaders in the LNG field. Both companies also possess LNG technology solutions, IT tools and proven project execution models.

Aker Kvaerner has a long track record for engineering and construction of advanced process facilities in USA and Canada, including LNG projects. The company has in-depth knowledge of market conditions and governmental requirements at various potential onshore and offshore project sites in North America. In addition, the company has a long experience with the use of specialty subcontractors, local permitting requirements and American labor regulations.

IHI is the world leader in delivering more onshore receiving terminals globally than any contractor with their LNG tanks and tank containment technology. The company has delivered several record-breaking projects, with technology and methodology proven through numerous installations in metropolitan areas. The company is currently constructing the first grass roots LNG terminal in Mexico with full containment tanks, the first to be built in North America.
