17 March 2009 – Aker Solutions has successfully delivered a highly specialised package of work for inclusion in the UK license application by Westinghouse Electric Company UK for its AP1000™ nuclear reactor design. Westinghouse has brought its US compliant generic AP1000 nuclear reactor design to the UK to seek approval from the UK Regulators.

Larry Eisenstatt, project manager for Westinghouse said, “Aker Solutions provided high quality information on waste management techniques and environmental analysis focused upon the detailed requirements of the UK Environment Agency.”
David Ley, president and managing director, Aker Solutions’ E&C business said, “Aker Solutions has a core capability in this area and is delighted to have been able to support Westinhouse Electric with this important step towards achieving UK regulatory approval for their AP1000 reactor.”
The Generic Design Assessment (GDA) is a process established by the UK Regulators to assess the reactor designs as part of the initial step in the UK Nuclear New Build Strategy. This involved a preliminary assessment, in 2007, of the AP1000 reactor design by the UK Environment Agency. This assessment identified several areas relating to waste treatment, discharge, storage and UK Environmental compliance that required further development in order to satisfy the requirements associated with the UK Licence application. With the expertise from Aker Solutions, Westinghouse submitted the updated application, ‘UK AP1000 Environment Report’, to the UK Environment Agency at the end of 2008.
Throughout 2008, working closely with Westinghouse and the AP1000 ‘Working Group’ comprising of Utility companies and potential plant operators, Aker Solutions continually supported Westinghouse in their licence application opposite the UK Regulators – the UK Environment Agency, the Health & Safety Executive (NII) and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA)/Radioactive Waste Management Directive (RWMD).
