Lifesaving first aid for children

Preparing for the Easter holidays, Aker Solutions in Bergen teaches first aid on children to all employees, in close collaboration with the Norwegian Red Cross. The course entitled "First Aid for those with childcare responsibilities" has proven to be very popular amongst employees.

This course teaches what to do if a child is knocked unconscious and gives people ta good preparation for the holiday, should any accidents occur. Employees receive training on topics such as how to alert, lifesaving first aid, examination and revival of lifeless children.

Engineer Annika Nesse from Aker Solutions was one of the participants at the course. “I have a son who is one year and four months old, and I have been thinking for a long time about taking a course in first aid, because I have previously not known what to do if something happened,” she said to the local media ‘NRK Vestlandsrevyen’, which was present at the course. “Now that I‘ve been on a course I feel safer and dare to take action if anything should happen.”

“Our employees give us feedback that they feel more prepared if something were to happen after they have taken this course”, says HSE Manager and Course Supervisor, Magnus Skjelde. “Although the vast majority of employees have had general first aid training, they do learn and become aware of new things. In order to facilitate a good working environment, we see that initiatives aimed at leisure and especially the family of employees is something that people appreciate.

Partnership

Aker Solutions has established a partnership with the Red Cross, which gives the company the opportunity to offer courses of high quality. The agreement with the Red Cross implies that all Aker Solutions employees have an opportunity to take courses in first aid / HSE. “This course, which provides training in what to do if something were to happen to a child, is something we offer in addition to regular first aid / HSE courses in Aker Solutions” says regional manager for Aker Solutions in Bergen, Erik Erdal. “We will continue to offer the course to our employees, because it is important to us that our employees feel safe even in their spare time.”

So far, 60 employees at the Bergen office have learned cardiovascular resuscitation for children. Aker Solutions also offers first aid courses and this particular course in first aid for children, to employees in other parts of Norway.

In addition to the possibility to run these types of courses, the partnership between Aker Solutions and Red Cross is an agreement of mutual cooperation. The main focus is on disaster and emergency relief work, but the company also contributes in other areas, including by encouraging employees to be volunteers for the Red Cross. Under the agreement and mutual knowledge exchange, the Red Cross is to help with expertise in international humanitarian law, humanitarian work and volunteering, whilst Aker Solutions contributes with expertise within risk analysis, project management and engineering services.
