It is a patent design subsea power cable that differs from traditional power cables due to its long lay-length, internal elements encased by longitudinal channel elements, radial contact in channel elements and design flexibility.

It is tuned and designed according to project and client specifications, applicable from shallow to ultra deep waters, and made to serve operators in both the oil and gas and the renewable sector.

General features of Aker Solutions' power cable systems include:

  • Proven and patented design
  • Low helix lay-angle (~2deg), which provides:
    • Efficient utilisation of  tension elements within the cross section
    • Minimum torque generated at high umbilical tension
    • Enhanced dynamic capacity
  • Helical elements radially supported in separate conduits, giving:
    • High crush load capacity
    • Very high impact capacity, designed to meet client specifications
    • Power cores move axially with minimum friction
  • No armouring system:
    • Axial stiffness is achieved by tension elements within the cross section
    • Cable accepts high forced twist
    • Cable accepts high compression load
    • Increased safety factor
    • Cable can be installed in rougher weather

Aker Solutions' power umbilicals provide several benefits compared to conventional cable design, such as:

  • Qualified for ultra-deep water application
  • Light weight, yet more robust
  • Capable of withstanding higher installation loads
  • Good mechanical protection
  • Improved fatigue properties
  • No need for separate armouring system
  • Minimises the number of factory joints due to longer power core lengths
  • Less stand-by time in installation, thus reduced costs in installation
  • Use of proven technology for bundling
  • Design flexibility to meet any impact protection requirements
