Single trip multi purpose tool

The single trip multi purpose tool is a completion tool for running casing hangers and pack-offs in a single trip. The new tool, whilst enjoying some of the highest operating parameters in the industry, incorporates several innovative features which improve safety, reliability, performance and reduces complexity.

The new single trip multi purpose tool is available for operations and is scheduled to be run offshore for the first time in early 2011. The new tool has several innovative new features including:

  • Emergency disconnect from the well architecture.  Aker Solutions' new single trip multi purpose tool incorporates a significant health and safety advantage over other single trip tools by allowing the operator to release the tool from the casing string in just a few short minutes, at any time during tool operations and in the event of failure modes.  The emergency disconnect function itself has four levels of redundancy and can be functioned hydraulically or mechanically.
  • Expanded flow-by, Aker Solutions new single trip multi purpose tool has a minimum cross sectional flow-by diameter of 0.75 inches.  This accelerates the cementing operations by reducing the throttle effect on the cement returns.
  • Washout facility, Aker Solutions new single trip multi purpose tool has the ability to clean the sealing faces of the casing hanger and wellhead prior to placing the pack off.  This is particularly a problem in deep water wells where there is a significant volume of fluid from which settlement can accumulate at the seal face region.  Fluid is circulated through the tool bore and is expelled via eight high velocity jets.  These jets are designed to create a vortex within the wellbore which excites any particles and suspended material and pushes it to the outer diameter of the bore under centrifugal forces.  Debris from cement returns and particles suspended in the medium are lifted from the wellhead due to displacement, allowing the pack-offs to be cleanly placed in the sealing position.
  • Controlled pack-offs placement, Aker Solutions new single trip multi purpose tool places the pack-offs against the casing hanger with a controlled and deliberate mechanism, resulting in a highly repeatable operation.
  • Pack-off testing, Aker Solutions new single trip multi purpose tool will test individual pack-offs to an annulus pressure of 15,000 psi from above, and a hang-of load of 1,125,000 lbf (actual pack-off capacity 3.6m lbf).
  • Pack-offs recovery, Aker Solutions new single trip multi purpose tool has the ability to automatically recover a pack-offs that does not set correctly, or be operated to recover a pack-off that fails its initial testing sequence.  This saves the requirement for a recovery trip.
  • Pre-run testing, Aker Solutions new single trip multi purpose tool can be set up for make up and pressure tested as such, prior to mobilisation.  From this position only right hand rotation is required to make up the casing hanger and complete the casing string.
