Monoethylene glycol (MEG) technology

MEG used for hydrate inhibition in closed loop pipelines will gradually become contaminated. Regular replacement or continuous make-up is necessary to avoid excessive scaling and corrosion in the regeneration and injection systems. Dissolved salts from the formation water, together with scaling and corrosive products from the pipeline are the main causes of these problems.

Aker Solutions proprietary process for recovery and purification of MEG has proven to be a reliable technology for closed loop hydrate inhibition systems. Conventional MEG regeneration systems that simply boil off water and flashes/skims off hydrocarbons, will leave all other pollutants to accumulate in the MEG.

Aker Solutions' MEG regeneration and reclamation process solves this problem by fully reclaiming the MEG. All solids, dissolved salts and chemicals are removed by evaporating not only the water, but also the MEG.

Solids and salts are separated and disposed, and the MEG is regenerated to the required concentration by water/MEG distillation. This process can also be applied to a slipstream off the MEG loop.

Field proven technology removes salts, corrosive products and water from MEG in:

  • Full and slip stream concepts
  • On shore and off shore designs

MEG system offers:

  • Operational experiences with heavy salt loads
  • Low MEG losses
  • Low utility consumption
  • Robust chemistry control
  • Robust equipment selection based on earlier experiences
