Seawater sulphate reduction systems

The sulphate reduction process selectively removes sulphate ions from sea water while allowing sodium and chloride to remain in the injection water. This process is based on nanofiltration separation technology, using FILMTEC™SR90 membranes.

Aker Solutions designs and delivers system packages for sea water sulphate reduction.

Aker Solutions designs and delivers system packages for sea water sulphate reduction. Sulphate reduction plants are normally supplied as turnkey sea water injection systems, including facilities for pretreatment (filtration and deaeration), pumps, membrane racks, membrane cleaning systems, utilities, interconnecting piping, valves, controls and high pressure injection pumps.

Principle of operation

The process is based on nanofiltration separation technology, using some of the chemistry and product design of the thin film composite membranes that were originally developed for reverse osmosis membranes used in sea water desalination.

The membrane stops and rejects the sulphate off its surface while allowing sodium and chloride to pass through as permeate. To maximise the membrane area per module, membranes are constructed in a spiral wound configuration. A major advantage is enhanced self-cleaning due to turbulent flow at the membrane surface, significantly reducing fouling, enhancing process performance and membrane life.
