Our St. John’s, NL office is looking for a Senior Payroll & Benefits Administrator to join our team!

In this role, you’ll partner closely the Payroll/People & Organization team to help deliver accurate and timely weekly and bi-weekly payroll. You’ll play a key part in supporting timesheet processing, government remittances, year-end activities, and benefits administration - helping keep everything running smoothly.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead the end-to-end processing and review of weekly and bi-weekly payrolls, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with legislative and organizational requirements.
  • Administer employee benefits, pension plans, and related programs, including enrollments, changes, terminations, reconciliations, and employee communications.
  • Ensure the accurate processing and maintenance of employee timesheets, attendance records, leave balances, and payroll-related employee data.
  • Prepare, reconcile, and remit payroll deductions, taxes, pension contributions, benefit premiums, and other statutory remittances within prescribed deadlines.
  • Coordinate and complete month-end, quarter-end, and year-end payroll activities, including T4s, Records of Employment (ROEs), taxable benefits reporting, and other regulatory filings.
  • Maintain payroll policies, procedures, controls, and records, ensuring compliance with applicable employment standards, tax legislation, collective agreements, and organizational requirements.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for escalated payroll and benefits inquiries, providing professional guidance and issue resolution to employees and management.
  • Analyze payroll and benefits data, prepare reconciliations, and support internal and external audits as required.
  • Collaborate closely with Finance, Human Resources, and operational stakeholders to support payroll accounting, benefit reconciliations, budgeting, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, system enhancements, and payroll and benefits best practices to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance to Payroll Coordinators and other team members as required.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects assigned by the Department Manager

We think you should have:

  • Diploma or Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education, professional certifications, and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in payroll administration, including responsibility for complex payroll and benefits programs.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation required; Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) designation considered an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of payroll legislation, taxation, employment standards, and benefits administration requirements in Newfoundland and Labrador and Alberta.
  • Strong understanding of pension administration, group benefits, Workers' Compensation requirements, and applicable regulatory compliance obligations.
  • Demonstrated experience processing hourly, salaried, and unionized payrolls within medium to large, multi-jurisdictional organizations.
  • Experience managing year-end payroll processes, government reporting, remittances, reconciliations, and audits.
  • Working knowledge of ADP Workforce Now or a comparable HRIS/payroll system.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data analysis, reporting, and reconciliation functions.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and attentionto- detail skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to manage confidential information and build effective working relationships across the organization.
