Platform removal operations

Deep Panuke

Engineering, procurement, fabrication and execution of the de-installation of the 21,000-tonne Deep Panuke production field center, follwed by transportation to shore.

Aker Solutions developed a controlled reverse-installation method, then executed the safe removal of a non-refloatable offshore production platform offshore Nova Scotia, Canada. The operation was delivered on schedule and budget, despite stringent regulatory constraints.

The challenge

The Deep Panuke production platform had to be removed from its remote offshore location and transported to Halifax. Because the jack-up platform could not be refloated, it had to be removed intact rather than dismantled offshore.

The operation required precise control as the platform was transferred onto a barge. Regulatory requirements and strict COVID-19 restrictions created additional execution and schedule risk.

Our solution

Aker Solutions developed a cost-effective reverse-installation method using a barge and station-keeping spread, together with subcontractors Boa Offshore and Semar.

A purpose-designed grillage system with embedded air-cushion damping was used to control and soften the landing of the platform onto the barge. Careful planning and disciplined execution enabled the team to complete the operation under strict COVID-19 restrictions.

Outcomes

The platform was safely removed and handed over to the client in Halifax. The controlled removal method reduced HSE exposure and operational risk while maintaining the project schedule and budget despite significant external constraints.

The project demonstrated Aker Solutions’ ability to combine marine engineering, purpose-designed temporary systems and offshore execution to solve a complex decommissioning challenge.
