Aker Solutions signs MoU with Nordbex

Aker Solutions has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Swedish-based climate-tech company, Nordbex to develop a portfolio of future BIOCCUS (bioenergy with carbon capture, use and storage) plants across Europe.

Under the MoU, the companies will combine their technology, competency and capabilities to realize Nordbex 1, Sweden’s first replicable BIOCCUS facility. Aker Solutions will provide project management, owner's engineering and EPCm services, whilst Nordbex will lead as project developer.

Scheduled for deployment in the SE4 electricity region by the first half of 2029, the facility will turn forestry waste into biofuel, generating electricity and heat for local communities while efficiently capturing CO2.

Collaboration between Aker Solutions and Nordbex began in 2023, when Aker Solutions’ consultancy arm, Entr, was awarded a contract to carry out engineering studies for Nordbex 1, examining the integration of standalone technologies. The MoU marks the next phase, paving the way for future joint initiatives.

“Nordbex’s vision of delivering stable, clean electricity and heat while safely removing CO2 from the atmosphere resonates perfectly with Aker Solutions’ drive towards sustainable and innovative energy solutions,” says Henrik Inadomi, executive vice president of New Energies at Aker Solutions.

“We’re excited to support Nordbex in delivering robust, future-ready BIOCCUS plants and in shaping the global decarbonization agenda.”

Thomas Öström, CEO of Nordbex and Henrik Inadomi, EVP of New Energies at Aker Solutions.

The MoU grants Aker Solutions exclusivity on future BIOCCUS plants 2 and 3 developed by Nordbex, with a first right of offer on subsequent projects.

“We’re proud to team up with Aker Solutions to deliver a new generation of BIOCCUS plants. While BIOCCUS has been a recognized method for removing carbon from the atmosphere for decades, Nordbex’s unique business model of building plants that are scalable, financeable and set up for replication will ensure a maximum climate impact while generating income from the sale of stable electricity and heat as well as high-quality carbon removal certificates,” says Carl Berglund, co-founder and CCO of Nordbex.

“Aker Solutions’ capable organization, their extensive experience within complex and large-scale project execution, including their unmatched track record in the CCUS sphere, will help accelerate our vision of climate-positive energy infrastructure and delivering net-negative CO2 emissions.”
